Tomasz Adamek-James Toney Deal in Place For Sept. 8

Posted by: Keith Idec on 7/2/2012 .

Sources have confirmed an agreement is in place for Tomasz Adamek to fight James Toney on Sept. 8 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
The heavyweight bout will take place in the afternoon so that the independent pay-per-view main event can air in prime time in Adamek’s native Poland. The afternoon start also will help avoid competing with HBO and Showtime cards scheduled to air that night.
The 43-year-old Toney (74-7-3, 45 KOs, 2 NC) beat Bobby Gunn by technical knockout after five rounds in his last fight, a heavyweight encounter April 7 in Southaven, Miss. Gunn (21-5-1, 18 KOs, 1 NC), whom Adamek stopped after four rounds in a cruiserweight title fight nearly three years ago at Prudential Center, said he suffered a broken hand during the fourth round of his fight against Toney.
The victory over Gunn marked Toney’s return to the heavyweight division. The trash-talking former middleweight/super middleweight/cruiserweight champion, far removed from being one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, suffered a lopsided loss to Russian cruiserweight contender Denis Lebedev (24-1, 18 KOs) in his previous fight, a 12-rounder Nov. 4 in Moscow.
The 35-year-old Adamek (46-2, 28 KOs) most recently defeated Philadelphia’s Eddie Chambers by unanimous decision in a 12-round fight at Prudential Center (116-112, 116-112, 119-109). The former light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion has won two bouts by decision since WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KOs) dominated him en route to a 10th-round TKO win Sept. 10 in Wroclaw, Poland.
Chambers (36-3, 18 KOs) suffered a torn tendon in his left arm during the first round against Adamek, which essentially left him to compete with one arm for 11-plus rounds. He was scheduled to have surgery Monday to repair the injury, which will require several months of rehabilitation.
An official announcement of the Adamek-Toney fight is expected later this week, once contracts are finalized. Tickets to Adamek’s ninth fight at Prudential Center, where the Kearny, N.J., resident has regularly drawn large crowds since December 2008, will go on sale shortly thereafter.

Yeah and its not like it really does anything for Adamek. This win would be less impressive than beating a one armed Eddie Chambers,

It really does nothing for either fighter. Toney doesn't have much left in the tank. He has been on E for a while. I don't see how Adamek's handlers would take this fight. I know he has the ultimate home fight advantage but atleast use that for what it is worth against a fighter that will move you along toward what I am guessing is another stab at the HW title. Why not look for a fight against Povetkin. With that being said, I may go see this fight as it is only a couple of hours away from me.

Well for Toney a win would be huge but really dont see it happening.

As far as going to it, of course you should.

There are so many options for Adamek...a fight against Povetkin, Helenius, Arreola among others...there must be a reason why they are taking this fight. Beating Toney does nothing for Adamek, except keep him busy and in shape, but losing to Toney damages his career.

I guess they're keeping him busy and don't want to risk a loss before putting him on NBC in December.

How much damage would a Toney loss really do? Tomasz would've lost handily to Chambers without the injury. He's already been fully dominated by Vitali. And really, we all know Adamek is essentially just a step or two up from a club fighter. Honestly, how badly can you hurt a guy's career that isn't all that good and isn't much above a journeyman himself?

In fact club fighters and journeymen are pretty much all Adamek has fought since moving up to heavyweight.
1)Bobby Gunn at his last cruiser fight,
2)then waaaaaay past it Golota,
3)Estrada,
4)a retired Michael Grant,
5)Maddalone
6)McBride
7)and Aguilera

The only exceptions are Chris Arreola and Vitali Klitschko... and I love Arreola but he's not much more than a club fighter either. I mean the best win on his record is Jameel McCline in 2009. That ain't much.

Adamek is one of my favorite heavyweights, mainly because there's hardly any to root for. But he doesn't fight anyone good. And, if he loses to Toney it wouldn't be that big of a shocker to me. I mean, how badly can you hurt a career of fighting tomato cans? They'd probably both make a killing in rematch revenue and Adamek can hope Vitali retires and opens up the WBC belt again meanwhile.
I predict that Tomasz wins this fight, don't get me wrong... but it's not like he's some elite level guy who needs to protect his record.

Let's not forget Adamek's career at LHW and Cruiser before we start calling him "essentially just a step or two up from a club fighter". His career at HW has not been stellar but that should not take away from what he accomplished in other weigh classes. In a small HW division Adamek can hang with the best. It is a shame that Chambers injured his arm and wwe should see that rematch at some point.

I don't dismiss his lighter weight quality at all.
My question is, how long does Adamek have to fight tomato cans and club brawlers before he becomes one himself? It's not like he stays elite if he doesn't fight elite. I mean other than Chris, Eddie, and Vitali has Adamek fought anyone who was even rated in the top 10 since he came to heavyweight? Vitali crushed him and Eddie would've outpointed him IMO. So he barely scrapes past Arreola (another near club fighter) with an MD. Not impressive.
I love the guy, but please. This isn't LHW or CW anymore. Maybe if he & Toney moved down to cruiserweight it'd hurt Tomasz's CW legacy to lose. But at heavyweight he's just picking on journeymen. 6 out of 9 fights at heavyweight since 2009 have been against tomato cans. He nearly lost to Chris, nearly lost to Eddie, and got schooled by Vit. It's not like we're talking a top quality career here on the line against the faded Toney.

Talking just at heavyweight... if you wouldn't say Adamek is "essentially just a step or two up from a club fighter" like I would... what would you call him?

Of those you mentioned, I would love to see Povetkin vs Adamek. I think it would be a good match.

Even winning against Toney and looking bad will damage Adamek. Everybody except Randy Couture ends up looking bad against this version of Toney.

Sure. You ignore my question so I'll be happy to answer yours, lol.

Let's start with the fact that "elite" at heavyweight doesn't mean the same thing it means at welterweight or at middleweight. But even the casual fan knows that I guess. I would say that fighting guys in the top 15 would keep Adamek in the top 10/aka heavyweight's version of "elite".

Here's the WBC's ratings:
Chris Arreola (US) USNBC
Denis Boytsov (Russia)
Bermane Stiverne (Canada) SILVER
Mariusz Wach (Poland) INTL
Chauncy Welliver (US) AMERICA/ABCO
Tyson Fury (GB) COMM
Manuel Charr (Lebanon/Syria) SILVER INTL
Seth Mitchell (US)
Luis Ortiz (Cuba) LATINO/FECARBOX
Odlanier Solis (Cuba)
Kubrat Pulev (Bulgaria) EBU
Andrew Wawrzyk (Poland) BALTIC/CISBB
Tomasz Adamek (Poland)
Alexander Dimitrenko (Germany)
Franklin Lawrence (US)

Adamek fight any of those guys? Just Chris.

How about the IBF top 15?
1 NOT RATED 2 Tony Thompson United States 3 Chris Arreola United States 4 Kubrat Pulev Bulgaria 5 Denis Boytsov Germany 6 Tomasz Adamek Poland 7 Jonathon Banks United States 8 Alexander Ustinov Russian Federation 9 Odlanier Solis Cuba 10 Alexander Dimitrenko Germany 11 Kevin Johnson United States 12 Edmund Gerber Germany 13 Eddie Chambers United States 14 Travis Walker United States 15 Bryant Jennings

Adamek fought Arreola, Chambers and Jonathon Banks. Should've lost to Eddie, squeaked by Arreola, and he fought Banks as a cruiserweight. We're talking about Adamek's time as a heavyweight.

How about the WBO?
1. Denis Boytsov RUS
2. Seth Mitchell (NABO) USA
3. Alexander Ustinov RUS
4. Chris Arreola USA
5. Robert Helenius FIN
6. David Haye GB
7. Carlos Takam (WBO Africa) CAM
8. Chauncy Welliver (Asia-Pacific Int.)(Oriental Int.) NZ
9. Luis Ortiz (Latino) CUB
10. Kubrat Pulev BUL
11. Tony Thompson USA
12. Monte Barrett (Asia-Pac)(Oriental) USA
13. Tyson Fury GB
14. Francesco Pianeta ITA
15. Jonathan Banks

How'd Adamek do against these guys? Oops didn't fight any of em except Arreola. Over 2 years ago.

And the WBA:
1. HASIM RAHMAN USA
2. ROBERT HELENIUS (WBA I/C) FIN
3. ALEXANDER USTINOV RUS
4. DENIS BOYTSOV RUS
5. LUIS ORTIZ (INT) CUB
6. KUBRAT PULEV BUL
7. RUSLAN CHAGAEV UZB
8. CHRIS ARREOLA USA
9. MANUEL CHARR SYR
10. ANDRZEJ WAWRZYK (WBA INT) POL
11. JOVO PUDAR (PABA) BIH
12. TRAVIS WALKER USA
13. MAGOMED ABDUSALAMOV RUS
14. OLEG PLATOV UKR
15. RAPHAEL ZUMBANO BRA

Just Arreola. Not too impressive.

Okay, okay maybe I'm asking too much for Tomasz to fight someone who's actually rated by an org.

Here's my list of guys Adamek could've fought in the past 3 years since he moved to heavyweight:
Samuel Peter in 2009 was still a solid foe.
Kevin Johnson in 2009 was still undefeated and was hardly marked by Vitali even afterwards.
Tony Thompson has been the top contender for a couple years now.
Alexander Povetkin is obvious for being undefeated and holding a belt.
David Haye is obvious since they both came up from cruiser and he had a belt.
Nicolai Valuev was still in the ring when Adamek moved divisions.
Ruslan Chagaev
Albert Sosnowski
Ray Austin and Lamon Brewster are at least better than who Tomasz found to fight.
Robert Helenius, Tyson Fury, Edmund Gerber are all upcoming prospects who make a great fight.
Odlanier Solis is probably the most avoided heavyweight out there.
Evander Holyfield is at least fit and willing.
Shannon Briggs during his comeback would've been a massive challenge for Tomasz.
Kubrat Pulev.
Alexander Dimitrenko.

Jeez. Just scroll through page one and two of boxrec now that I think of it. Tomasz Adamek has barely fought any of the guys in the top 50! How low on the totem pole does he have to go to find a fight? I'll tell ya how low, lol... turn to the club-level page.
I still love the guy. But I'm not fooled into thinking he has a heavyweight resume. A rap sheet maybe. Resume? Nah.

Cheers.

Well I am not a huge Adamek fan, hes okay and I enjoy watching him fight but am in no way biased. And besides I would hate to side with George on any boxing related topic.

That being said in what era was the top 10 at HW as talented as the top 10 at WW or MW? I know the division is weak right now but its always been a little behind as far as depth etc.

Hamed and Calzaghe should be out and Judah should be in the hall of fame, Toney is more punch drunk than I thought. He is also slurring his words more and more by the year. I used to find him funny but this video is actually pretty sad even if you are a Toney supporter.
