This is a rematch from our last OPP boxing show this past November.  In that fight an accidental head butt cut short a crowd pleasing competitive fight. Abella suffered a nasty gash that required 8 stitches above his left eye.

Ward a former badge vs badge heavyweight champion is looking to turn things around after a rough 2012.

Kovalev and Campillo Headline NBC Sports Network “Fight Night ” January 19th at Mohegan Sun Arena

Campillo (right)

NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night boxing series kicks off its second season on Saturday, January 19th, with a high-voltage double header. The nationally televised event will be shown live from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, beginning 9PM ET.

In the Internationally flavored main event, light heavyweights Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 7 KOs, of Madrid, Spain, meets Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 15 KOs, Chelyabinsk, Russia, in an compelling 10-rounder. The bout looks like a classic boxer-puncher match up, with Kovalev bringing the power while Campillo provides the finesse.

Campillo is a former WBA light heavyweight champion, who came within a whisker of winning the IBF crown against Tavoris Cloud last year. Cloud retained his title by controversial decision, but most believed slick southpaw Campillo deserved the victory. “The Handsome Man” will look to bounce back by schooling the hard-punching “Krusher”, but this main event is a toss-up.

Kovalev has been on the rise, knocking out almost everyone put in his path. He hasn’t been extended to the final bell in more than two years, and will certainly be looking to add another KO to his resume, especially one with a name as distinguished as Campillo’s.

In the 10-round co-feature, Elvin Ayala, 26-5-1, 12 KOs, takes on Curtis Stevens, 22-3, 16 KOs, in a battle between two middleweights hungry for the spotlight. Their clash before a nationally televised audience should provide them with the perfect opportunity to shine.

Ayala, of New Haven, CT, is a well-travelled vet with six straight wins, three of them by KO. He stopped John Mackey at the Mohegan Sun in his last fight, and before that, pitched a near shutout on national TV against Eric Mitchell at Foxwoods, also in CT. Against Stevens, Ayala will again have the home-state advantage.

Curtis Stevens, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, is a rising star who’s kayoed four of his last six opponents. His most recent foe, Romaro Johnson, didn’t make it out of the first round. Another of his KO victims was then-undefeated Pitor Wilczewski, whom Stevens starched in three rounds.

Ayala and Stevens are both boxer-punchers with something to prove, and should provide each other with a serious test.

With these two excellent bouts on tap, and their likelihood to produce knockouts, boxing fans are certain to be the big winners on this busy night of televised boxing. With other cable boxing shows scheduled for later in the evening, these excellent Fight Night wars should be settled long before the other programs even begin.

Tickets go on sale to the public Saturday, November 17 at 10AM ET. They are priced at $125 and $40 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster 1-800-745-3000. Ticketmaster Link to January 19 NBCSN Fight Night at Mohegan Sun. For ADA accessible sales, call Mohegan Sun Box Office 1-800-862-8499.

Travis Walker “I see a stoppage coming!”

Travis Walker “I see a stoppage coming!”

By George Jimenez

Noche de Boxeo Radio had the chance to sit down with Travis “Freight Train”Walker (39-7-1, 31 KOs) to discuss his next fight with former two-time world champ Tomasz Adamek (46-2, 28KOs).  The fight is titled “Ironbound Throwdown” and it will be a 12 round main event at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on Saturday afternoon, September 8, 2012.  At stake will be Adamek’s IBF North American Heavyweight Title, and the chance at a future bigger fight and payday.  The interview was conducted by hosts Cesar Hernandez and George Jimenez as part of their weekly boxing show which airs every Monday at 8pm EST.  Below is a transcript of the interview:

Noche De Boxeo: Thank you for being on the show.  We know you have a very tough fight coming up against Tomasz Adamek, are you ready for it?

Travis Walker: I am so ready for it, thank you for having me

NDB: We know that your last fight was a great victory against Kali Meehan inAustralia, what does that fight do for your confidence to fight somebody like Tomasz Adamek?

TW: Well actually my confidence was already there, but it definitely helped me mentally to know exactly where I am at in this game, that I can still compete in this game, because I was actually getting a little frustrated with some of the rulings that I’ve had in the past and it helps me with my confidence to know what I need to do to make myself a better fighter.

NDB: How is your preparation going for your upcoming fight?

TW: Everything is going super, man!

NDB: How do you prepare for a guy like Adamek who is smaller than you and moves a lot in the ring? Is there anything you are working on especially for this fight?

TW: Yes, definitely, I need to work on keeping my defense up real tight, because he throws a lot of punches, he get in-get out.  I have to get in a certain kind of shape in order to fight a guy like this because he is a “mover”.  And as a Heavyweight boxer we are not too used to movers.

NDB: Going into this fight not a lot of people are giving you a chance against Tomasz Adamek, but looking at your record you have fought some of the top Heavyweight fighters around, yet they have him as the favorite.  How do you respond to that?

TW: Most of my fights I have been looked as the underdog, but I still came out with a win, or they had to rob me in order to get the win.  So that really don’t bother me, I just have to do my thing.  I don’t mind proving to the people that I am here.

NDB: What do you think is the most dangerous thing about Tomasz Adamek?

TW: His speed.  He has great speed and with Tomasz you have to get to his speed level.  Although people have brought to my attention that he has slowed down as a boxer.  But I still have to prepare myself as if he has it.

NDB: What have you done as far as conditioning to prepare yourself for a fighter that has movement?  Have you worked more on your cardio, strength, or both? What is your game plan physically to prepare for Adamek?

TW: One of the things you have to do more is get your sprints in because you are going to have to throw punches in combinations, and then you get a small break, and then you go back at it.  I do a lot of “suicides” and stuff like that.

NDB: What is your motivating factor for this fight? What is pushing you to excel?

TW: What is pushing me is my confidence, what I got to do, this is going to make me or break me.  I really don’t have another four years to try to climb back up to the top so I gotta get it, I gotta make it happen.

NDB: We usually give our guests a chance to send a shout and thank the people that support them; this is your time, go ahead.

TW: I want to thank my real friends and family members who always stuck by me, always kept me uplifted in my career, believed in me; and all my fans that really believed in me.  I have a lot of Facebook friends and Twitter friends that always hit me up and give me good motivational speeches and stuff like that, and that always helps me keep sharp.

NDB: Where can they follow you?

TW: On Facebook (and Twitter) they can find me under “Travis Walker”

NDB:  Before you leave we have a few more questions.  How do you deal with Adamek’s fans? His fights atPrudentialCenter usually get about 6 to 8 thousand fans, mostly Polish fans.  How do you prepare for something like that? And does that bother you at all?

TW: It really don’t bother me at all.  Actually it kind of “amps” me up for the fight, because a lot of people are going against me and I like to shut them up.  So that gives me the opportunity to quiet the crowd and I enjoy doing that.

NDB: As a follow-up question, are you worried at all if the fight goes to the score cards and something weird happens and they go against you? Some people claim that in the last fight, Adamek vs Chambers, they robbed Chambers? What is your opinion on that?

TW: I definitely believe they robbed Chambers but I feel like this, it’s going to be a tough fight regardless and I am used to that happening to me.  And the only way to stop that from happening to me is by stopping my opponent.  So I see a stoppage coming in my next fight, by me.

NDB: Are you giving us your official prediction? What’s the round?

TW: I am not going to force the knock out, I am not going by the round, I am just going to allow it to come, and I know it’s going to come.

NDB: That’s all the questions we have, thanks for being on the show, good luck on the fight and we hope it’s a good one.

TW: Thank you very much for having me.

Martinez Faces Macklin, continues to chase Chavez Jr.

By Vicky Villa (Leaveitintheringradio.com)

World Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla”Martinez(48-2-2, 27 KOs) will make another defense of the Diamond WBC belt he won when he defeated Serhiy Dzinziruk back in March, 2011.  Stepping up to the challenge is Matthew “Mack the Knife” Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs) fromIreland.  The fight will be the main event of a stacked card taking place on March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day)at the theater in Madison SquareGarden and is appropriately titled “The REAL Middleweight Championship – Get Your Irish Up”.

Martinez, arguably one of the top three best fighters in boxing, is the heavy favorite going into this fight and most fans expect “Maravilla” to have a comfortable night against the very game but overmatched Macklin.  The Argentinian fighter now residing inOxnard,Californiahas knocked out his last three opponents and if all predictions are correct, this will be his fourth.

Macklin is coming off a controversial loss in the hands of Felix Sturm, a fight that many fans and experts thought he won.  “Mack”, who regards himself as an all action come forward fighter, will need to have another impressive outing as well as some “Irish luck” to pull the upset.  Macklin is aware that he is in for a tough fight but sounds confident as he prepares to face a formidable champion.

“I am really confident about the fight, I think is coming at the right time for me…I am going to go in there and impose my style which is to go to war, and I am going to put that on him and make him fight my fight”, said Macklin in a recent interview.

Sergio knows he needs to win this fight to maintain his status as one of the elite fighters in the world.  But more importantly, winning this fight means getting the chance of finally fighting rising star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for the real WBC Middleweight belt, same belt he was “separated” from when he was elevated to “emeritus champion”.

The WBC has cleared the way for this fight to take place after Chavez Jr. made a successful defense of his title on February of this year.  President of the WBC Jose Sulaiman also warned the young champion that failure to comply with the organization’s ruling could result in Junior being stripped.

“If a fighter doesn’t comply with our rules then he would be eliminated from our rankings.  If Julio doesn’t comply with our rules, then they will not laugh in our faces…I want to reconfirm that if Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. doesn’t respect the mandate of the WBC, then we will be forced to separate ourselves from his championship.” , said Sulaiman in a recent interview for the radio show “Noche de Boxeo”.

Martinez has chased Chavez Jr. for a while, and is very anxious for that fight to happen.  But on March 17th he needs to concentrate on defeating Macklin in order for that fight to materialize.

Serving as co-feature is the super middleweight 10-round fight “Bombs Away” which has all the ingredients to produce fireworks and the chance to steal the show.  Going head to head in a boxer vs. puncher fight is Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (20-0, 14 KOs) versus the very explosive Don “Da Bomb” George (22-1-1, 19KOs).

Both fights will air live on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing,” starting at 10 PM/ET 7 PM/PT.

Also on the card:

Unbeaten heavyweight Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (13-0, 13 KOs) takes on Jason Pettaway (11-0, 8KOs) in a 10/12 round fight for the vacant World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Silver Championship.

Junior middleweight Charlie Ota (19-1-1, 13 KOs) takes on Gundrick King (16-7, 11KOs)

Former world title challenger Argenis Mendez (19-2, 10 KOs), a Dominican junior lightweight, will be fighting in an eight-round bout against Daniel Attah (26-9, 9KOs)

Irish-American light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan (12-0, 8KOs) takes on Eric Watkins (6-1) in an eight-rounder.

Catskills middleweight Kevin Rooney (3-1, 1 KO), returns in a four-round bout against an opponent not yet announced.

Danny “Little Mac” McDermott (9-3-2, 4 KOs) is scheduled to fight in an eight-round junior welterweight fight against Danny O’Connor (16-1, 4KOs)

Heavyweight Thomas Hardwick (4-0, 2KO’s) will take on Blu Delong (0-3) in a four-round bout.

Tickets are priced at $505, $355, $205, $125 and $65, and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased through the Madison Square Garden Box Office or through Ticketmaster, at Ticketmaster.com, or by calling (866) 858-0008. Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin ready to hit curveball out of park

Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin ready to hit curveball out of park

LAS VEGAS (July 21 2011) – Undefeated middleweight prospect Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillinmay be a prizefighter, rather than a baseball player, but never-the-less the talented Cuban-American plans to hit a curveball out of the park Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Coming off of an explosive third-round destruction of former world title challenger Jesse Brinkley this past April for the USBO super middleweight title, Quillin (24-0, 18 KOs) prepared for the last eight weeks to fight once again in his natural weight class against veteran middleweight “Marvelous” Tarvis Simms (27-1-1, 11 KOs), a southpaw, in a10-round bout on Saturday night’s Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah undercard at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Quillin-Simms, however, was recently cancelled when Tarvis reportedly broke a rib in training camp. Now, the International Boxing Federation No. 5-rated Quillin, fighting out of Los Angeles, faced an entirely different fighter, Jason “The Hammer” LeHoullier(21-5-1, 8 KOs).

“I sparred and trained to fight a southpaw, Simms, and now I’m fighting a right-handed boxer,” Quillin said. “Hey, I’m a fighter and I can adjust to anybody. When Simms fell out all I cared about was still fighting. Jason LeHoullier stepped in and took a fight with 1 ½ weeks to go and that’s something not many guys would do against a top-level fighter like me. I’m not taking anything away from him because fighters like him can be dangerous. He may be coming in here trying to shock the world, tired of hearing people say he can’t win, and that could cause problems. But I am totally focused on him. I know he’s a guy who puts it all on the line, but he’s facing a guy who can box and is a big puncher. I’m going to set him up and, then, bang like a firecracker.”

Quillin has received a lot of attention lately because his trainer, Freddie Roach, went public saying ‘Kid Chocolate” can beat world middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. “I would have been ready to fight Sergio Martinez on July 23,”Quillin added. “Physically, I’m ready and I would have been 10 times more ready mentally for that fight. For now, though, I’m 100-percent focused on Jason LeHoullier. After this fight I’ll be ready to fight anybody in the world, including Sergio Martinez. The sky’s the limit for me. If everything goes right Saturday night, I’d like to comeback right away and fight September 17. But I’m not into the business end of boxing, I’m a fighter, and I’ll let my promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, and manager, John Seip, take care of that.”

Quillin-LeHoullier is a scheduled 10-round bout on the non-televised portion of the Khan-Judah world junior welterweight unification fight on HBO.

Sherman continued this for most of the opening round. Finally after chasing his opponent around Robb cut off the ring and landed a solid right that immediately staggered Sherman, backing him into the corner. Now on the ropes Robb opened up his assault forcing the ref to step in and stop the barrage of punches.
Time of stoppage was 2:28 of round number one. Guy Robb improves to 5-0 2Ko’s while Tyshawn Sherman drops to 0-1.

Again in round three Sanchez comes out the aggressor and takes control with his jab. Sanchez lands a nice left hook as well. During the next exchange the fighters clash heads opening a good size cut on Sanchez.
Doctor Smith Ketchum stops the fight because of the accidental foul. The bout is ruled a no contest since it was stopped before the fourth round was completed.

Joel Julio “I am a strong opponent at welterweight”

“I am moving down to 147 lbs. because I feel is the right weight for me.  I am not going to have any problems at this weight because my fists will do the talking.  I am a strong opponent at Welterweight and I feel I will have a better opportunity to become a world champion,” said Joel Julio in a recent interview when asked about the reason for moving down to 147.

Although Julio’s run in the Jr. Middleweight division was less than stellar, one also has to consider the level of opposition he fought.  Losses to ex-champion Serhiy Dzinziruk, hot contenders James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo although disappointing, can serve as valuable experience for his career.  His only other loss was to Carlos Quintana back in 2006 in a fight that saw Quintana outbox Julio to win a decision.

Julio is looking to move down to his old division because he feels that he can have more opportunities and also feels that he is more competitive at his old weight.  He wants to leave the losses behind and concentrate on the bigger picture, which is to get a title shot in the welterweight division and fulfill his dream of becoming a world champion.

“I would like to fight Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, but I am prepared to fight anyone at 147 lbs and I feel I can beat them.  My speed and power increase at 147 lbs and I want to remind everyone that I have 31 KOs out of 36 wins while fighting at Welterweight,” Said Julio

He was to have his first test at welterweight in the form of Antwone Smith whom he was slated to fight on May 20th as part of the Friday Night Fights main event, but Smith was forced to withdraw from his fight because of an elbow injury.  Instead, Julio’s new opponent is Agnes Adjaho (25-5, 14 KOs) who took the fight on a couple of weeks’ notice and will serve as Julio’s first roadblock as he moves down to his old weight class.

In 2005 Joel “Love Child” Julio was named prospect of the year by ESPN.com and he wants to show his fans that he can be that same Julio once again.  No longer the “Love Child” he wants to be known as “Predator”.

“On May 20th you are going to see a different Joel Julio, the same Julio who first arrived in the US, Joel ‘El Depredador’ Julio.”

Also fighting on this card are Sadam “World Kid’ Ali of Brooklyn, NY, (12-0, 7 KOs); Jose “Mangu” Peralta of Jersey City (6-1, 4 KOs); all action fighter Vinny O’Brien of East Hanover, (2-0, 2KOs);  Angel Concepcion, (4-0); Bronx, NY’s Joel Castillo, (8-0, 5KOs); and Tyrone Luckey of Middletown, NJ, (3-0,3 KOs).
